In India poverty is widespread and to measure it they proposed many methods. Before 2005 Indian government official measure poverty based on food security and it was defined from per capital expenditure for a individual person to consume required calories and his essentials to service.

Definition / Scope

According to the definition by Planning Commission of India, "poverty line is drawn with an intake of 2,400 calories in rural areas and 2,100 calories in urban areas. If a person is unable to get that much minimum level of calories, then he/she is considered as being below poverty line".

After 2005 Indian government adopted Tendulkar method and used rural, urban and regional with minimum expenditure per capital for survival of individual person.

By referring previous data (1972 to 2000) by Saxena Committee report says separated (food or drink) containing many calories and so likely to be fattening intake apart from nominal income in its economic analysis of poverty in India, and 50% of Indians lived below the poverty line. The Planning Commission of India, informs that poverty rate was 39%.
